Lanciano's ancestors can be found in the pedigrees of Olympic competitors and medal winners in all three FEI disciplines from 1956 to 2004. These are bloodlines that have stood the test of time . Via Literat Birkhahn Alchimist and Herold he descends straight from legendary performance bloodlines before WW I and II whose influence specially within the Trakehner breed even today dominates the pedigrees of all of the modern German Warmblood breeds.

Here are what some passionate bloodline experts are saying about him and about his breeding:

For Warmblood breeding:

During his  CWBHA inspection, guest and head inspector Fritz Von Blotnitz said, “Overall Thoroughbred stallion who could improve warmblood breeding. For a Thoroughbred horse he has enough elasticity”.

"This is a nearly perfect TB sport horse sire pedigree if you look at how the Germans used TBs in their WB breeding. The line breeding is text book, and Surumu is the Sadlers Wells of German TB breeding. He's the damsire of Monsun and the sire of Acatenango. That's Royalty. AND he's tail male Dark Ronald. I would breed a WB mare to him in a heartbeat."

As far as we know  Lanciano may be the ONLY tail male Dark Ronald stallion in North America.

For Racing:

"This horse was good enough to win the important Oppenheim-Colonia-Union-Rennen (G2 -Mile and a half or 2200m ), a major German Derby prep, and he has a glorious pedigree.  His paternal grandsire, Literat, is a full brother to his third dam, Liberty (both are Birkhahn-Lis) and this presents at 2 x 3.

What makes this pair of siblings so intriguing is that they carry three lines of the great broodmare Aversion via half or three-quarter siblings Alchimist/Arjaman/Aditi.  Oodles of Dark Ronald blood, which of course is the tail-male line of Surumu, populates this pedigree and he is also linebred to Ticino who is Birdcatcher-line via Isonomy if you can believe that.

He additionally carries a double of Reine-de-Course Friar’s Daughter via half siblings Bahram and Dastur and the only thing even vaguely American about his pedigree is broodmare sire Monseigneur who is by Graustark-Brown Berry, making him a full brother to Belmont winner Avatar.  This is old Whitney family of Remembrance (5-G).   

Either way, not only is he devoid of Mr. Prospector or other Raise a Native lines, Northern Dancer or Nearctic, but the only Pharos he has appears in his seventh generation!  This is via El Greco in *Ribot (if Graustark is really by *Ribot, that is) and via Nearco in Tamerlane.

Lanciano (GER) is tail-female to the great German foundation mare Legation by Herold.  This is the immediate family of German Derby winners Lebos, Lando, Laroche and Lauscher.  Also from this family is German Oaks winner Lis, she dam of the great sire Literat, a German 2000 Guineas winner as well as Group 1 winner Lord Udo.  This is the 7-b (Caroline) branch of the No. 7 (Blacklegs Royal Mare) family.
